Membersof the Academic StaffUnion of Universities, ASUU, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko chapter, Ondo Stateand the university authorities are on a collision course over a directivethat thestudentsshould resumefor lectures, as the strike by theunion continues afterfourmonths.
In a statementin Akure, Ondo Statecapital, Registrar of the state-owned university, R. B. Olotu had directed thestudentsto resumeon Monday, November25 for thesecond semester 2012/2013session.
In his statemententitled: ‘Resumption for the 2nd semester 2012/2013 session’, Olotu said, “All the studentsof Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, are hereby informedthat academicactivities ofthe second semesterof 2012/2013 session truncated as a result ofthe ASUU national strike are to resumeon Monday, 25th November, 2013 with the continuation of registration on the University portal (http://portal.aaua.edu.ng ).
“Lecturesare to starton Monday, 2nd December, 2013.”
The ASUU Chapterof theuniversity, however, dissociated itself from thepurported resumption of academicactivities in the university.
The Chapter’s chairperson, Busuyi Mekusi in a statementasked membersto disregard the directive.
“ASUU Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba AkokoBranch, wishes to dissociateitself from the purported resumptionof academic activitiesin the university, as its membersare still part of the ongoing national strike by theunion.
“Members should, therefore, disregard any pull toabandon the struggle, and besteadfastuntil the presentposition is reviewed by NEC.
“The union also wants to make it abundantly clear that it would resist everytyrannical propensity to intimidate and harass itsmembers,” Mekusi said.
